Small Business Marketing – Think Outside the box!


As a student of marketing, one of the gentleman that I follow recently had a photo with him in his kayak and a caption saying “You can’t think outside of the box, when you are working in one!”. This got me thinking, many of us have our places at work where we do our daily jobs.  That might be out on the sales floor, in an office, or if you are the owner of a service business like an electrician, plumber or carpet cleaner, that may be out at a customers location doing your work. Some of you might have home office where you play catch up on the things you can’t get finished at your business.  But where do you go when you want to be creative? 

I was thinking back to when I started my first business www.gellitecandles.com way back in 2002. We started off just planning on doing craft fairs and opening one of those new fangled web stores. Everything was new and exciting and since I was working full time at a different company, I would often take my lunch hour and head to a local park to think about candle designs and where we were going to take them.
What kind of marketing pieces we needed and how the website was going to look.

More recently, I have found myself sitting at my desk, staring at the computer screen, drawing a complete blank as to the project I am trying to work on and then being distracted either by email, a phone ringing, or someone showing up to ask a question. By being in boring or distracting surroundings, I never really get the creative bug that marketing calls for.

So I headed out to a local park and decided that I would just hike around the park with my video camera and a tripod and if I felt inspired, I would shoot a quick video on how to market a small business.  Over the course of a few hours, I was flooded with ideas and shot several videos. Since then, I have felt re-energized about the future and where things can go. If you haven’t gotten away from the day to day distractions to really spend time coming up with ideas on how to improve your business or your life, I would highly suggest it, even if it is only to get away for a couple of hours.
